Chapter Five

If Donna’s place was rough and ready, this place was positively medieval.

I’d never seen anything like it in my life.

Harley’s was an apt name for the place for parked outside was every kind of motorcycle imaginable.

Sam took my hand, which I had to admit, I was pleased about because I really didn’t feel safe when I walked in.

How wrong was I? The people couldn’t have been more welcoming to me.

I was a stranger in what I guessed was a tight knit circle of people, but they were utterly charming.

Thank God I dressed appropriately. I’d have felt a right gooseberry in a full evening dress.

The food was divine. The steak melted in my mouth and I ate more fries and coleslaw than was safe for my waistline.

There was nothing pretentious about the place at all, and Sam was a total gentleman.

We sat and talked by candlelight and I sank beer after beer and the hours whizzed by. Sam only drank orange juice.

Suddenly, it was eleven pm and my bed was calling to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I wanted him in the bed with me, but I wasn’t sure he thought of me that way. He didn’t give me any vibe that he wanted anything other than friendship. Yes, he paid me compliments, but he never overstepped any boundary.

Harleys was set just off the A41 and right on the riverfront. The evening was warm and humid, which was lucky for us as we idled along the front. The views were spectacular. “I can’t believe time has passed by so quickly.”

“Good company does that,” he replied. “And you’re certainly the best company I’ve had for a long time.”

“I’ve had a lovely time, Sam. I don’t want the night to end.”

“Me neither but we can do it again, if you’d like?”

“Love to.”

I held his hand and the realisation suddenly hit me. These last few days I’ve been searching for a man to sweep me off my feet. I still wanted the fairy-tale we all dreamed of.

“I only get one day a week off…”

“What about dinner at mine this weekend?”

“Sounds good to me, but don’t go to any trouble.”

He leaned in to kiss me and I gave in.

His lips were softer than I thought they would be, but I was lost to the moment as he engulfed me in his big strong arms.

We kissed for what seemed like an eternity.

“I’ve been wanting to do that since we first met, little lady.”

“That was some kiss, Sam.”

He chuckled. “I was out to impress.”

“And you did that, and some.”

We walked a little further along the river front.

“I better get you home.”

“Do you want to come in for coffee?”

“You know what,” he said, turning to face me. “I could so easily say yes, but something tells me your life is complicated right now and I don’t want to add any more pressure. I do want to see you again, and again, and again, I know that much, but I’ve never been the love ‘em and leave ‘em kinda guy.
